Q Some of my blocks measure the same on all four sides but don’t look square. Can I rescue them?

A Try “blocking” your blocks with the steam iron to return them to a true and square shape.

1. Use a fine-point permanent ink pen to draw a full-size block with all seamlines marked on a piece of paper or on heat-resistant template plastic. Note: If the block is not symmetrical, turn the traced block over, tape it to a window, and trace over the lines to make your squaring template. Mark this side “face up” for the blocking.

2. Place the squaring template face up on the ironing board and then place the block right side down with seamlines aligned. With straight pins, secure the corners and centers of each edge to the ironing board. Stretch or ease the block to fit the pattern.

3. With the iron set on steam at the cotton setting, steam the block thoroughly, using your hands to help reshape the block to match the drawing as it begins to cool down. Press, don’t iron. Allow to dry thoroughly before removing it from the blocking template.

Note: If you have several blocks to block, make a tracing for each one so you can block them all and allow them to cool. Don’t use photocopies — the ink may bleed and transfer to your blocks.
